With the federal government exploring the privatization of Canadian airports, Mississauga council wants to ensure the city has a say in the fate of Toronto Pearson International Airport.

“Our government needs to be there as the conversation is happening, not being told once a decision is made on the airports,” said Ward 3 Coun. Chris Fonseca, who documented her concerns in a motion passed at a recent general committee meeting.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is the private body that runs Pearson Airport, the largest passenger airport in Canada. Located in Mississauga, the airport is the city’s greatest economic asset. It generates 44,000 jobs in Peel, attracts hundreds of international businesses and facilitates roughly 6.3 per cent of Ontario’s GDP.
