Towards the end of September, when the temperature rose to its highest levels of 2017, my office started received calls from apartment dwellers in Ward 5 who were sweltering in their homes.

A misunderstanding of the City’s Adequate Heat Bylaw, which requires landlords to provide heat to tenants of at least 20 degrees Celsius from the middle of September, had landlords turning off air conditioning (and even cranking up the heat) just as temperatures were soaring.

With our climate changing, I’ve asked the City to take a closer look at this bylaw to see how we can ensure that tenants stay safe and comfortable.
